Airport expansion conflicts with Net Zero will be very hard to resolve, whilst economic case is unconvincing

Giving the go ahead for a batch of airport expansion projects around London has crystalised clear issues of conflicts between the government’s aviation and Net Zero policies says David Metz. Besides, the claim that the additional capacity is needed to support economic growth is spurious, he believes. Rather than facilitating business travel and new commercial activity, the growth will facilitate outbound leisure travel with a net disbenefit to the economy.
